For Leonardo Rivera, completing Centro’s GED program was about far more than earning a diploma. It was driven by a deep desire for personal and academic growth, and by the belief that his future could be greater if he was willing to take the steps necessary to change it. There came a point in his life when he realized that many of the goals he dreamed about would remain out of reach unless he completed his education. That realization became the motivation he needed to move forward.
Leonardo also wanted to set an example for his family. He hoped to show that growth is always possible, that it is never too late to rewrite your story, and that determination can open doors no matter where someone begins. Little by little, he began proving not only to those around him, but also to himself, that meaningful change is possible when you commit to it.
Before starting classes, Leonardo describes his life as uncertain and somewhat unstable. He often felt like he was not moving forward at the pace he wanted. He knew he had the potential to accomplish more, but at that time he lacked the tools, direction, and opportunity to fully pursue those ambitions. His daily routine was focused on getting through each day and doing his best, but without a clear path toward the future he imagined for himself.
There were moments of frustration, especially when he compared himself to others who had already completed their education. Not having a diploma sometimes caused him to question his own abilities. Yet those experiences also built resilience. They taught him the value of perseverance and planted the belief that his situation could change if he was willing to take action.
When the opportunity to enroll in Centro’s GED program with Carolina came, Leonardo chose to face the challenge and begin a new chapter. Like many adult learners, his path was not easy. One of the biggest obstacles he faced was balancing work and school at the same time. After long days on the job, he still had to find the energy to attend class, study, and complete assignments. There were many days when it felt like there simply were not enough hours in the day.
Staying motivated was another challenge, especially during stressful and exhausting moments. At times, he had to sacrifice rest and family time in order to keep progressing. Returning to school after time away also brought insecurities, including the fear of not understanding certain subjects or not performing as well as he hoped.
Still, every challenge became part of his growth. Through the process, Leonardo became more disciplined, more organized, and more determined. He learned that progress is not always easy, but every sacrifice can be worthwhile when it brings you closer to your goals.
Completing the program transformed Leonardo’s confidence. Where doubt once lived, he now carries belief in his own abilities. Negative comments from others once created uncertainty, but instead of allowing those voices to stop him, he turned them into motivation. By continuing forward, he demonstrated that no one else gets to define his future.
Today, he feels more secure in making decisions, taking on new challenges, and planning for what comes next. In the workplace, the GED has also created new opportunities, helping him feel more prepared, competitive, and capable of professional growth. What once felt limiting no longer defines him.
One of the people who most inspired Leonardo throughout this journey was his mother. Thinking about her sacrifices, her effort, and everything she had done for him gave him strength during difficult moments. He wanted to make her proud and show her that her support had made a difference. That motivation stayed with him through every challenge.
Now, Leonardo has reached another exciting milestone: he is a student at Central Community College pursuing a degree in Mechatronics. What may have once seemed impossible is now becoming reality. His GED was not the finish line, it was the beginning of new opportunities, bigger goals, and a future filled with possibility.
A quote from Aristotle has remained meaningful to him throughout this process: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” That message reflects everything Leonardo has learned. Success is built through consistency, discipline, and determination practiced day after day.
Leonardo’s story is a powerful reminder that setbacks do not define a person, and doubt does not have to be permanent. Growth begins the moment someone decides to keep going. For those considering the GED or working toward any goal, his advice is simple: do not give up, do not compare yourself to others, ask for help when needed, and believe in yourself even during the hardest moments.
