Evelyn’s Dream: MexaSweets LLC

For Evelyn, entrepreneurship began with something simple: a craving. During her first pregnancy, she began making small pancakes at home to satisfy a craving she couldn’t ignore. What started as a personal treat quickly caught the attention of others when she shared photos of her creations on social media. Friends, family, and even people outside her circle began asking if they could order them. Even in everyday spaces like the Becton Dickinson (BD), people would peek at the treats and ask about them. Those early moments planted the seed for what would eventually become MexaSweets LLC.


Today, Evelyn runs the business alongside her mother, Anabel, creating sweet treats that reflect creativity, culture, and a unique take on desserts that many in the community now look forward to enjoying.


Evelyn’s inspiration also comes from her children. As a mother of two, she wanted a career that allowed her to balance entrepreneurship and motherhood. The flexibility of running her own business means she can travel with her children, include them in her work, and avoid the constant stress of arranging childcare. For Evelyn, the business is about more than selling treats, it is about showing her children what it looks like to pursue something you love and to build something meaningful for your family.


Her mother, Anabel, became an essential part of that journey. Anabel already had experience making pancakes and selling treats years earlier while living in California. When she saw her daughter’s passion and vision begin to grow, she immediately stepped in to help. In many ways, Evelyn’s dream had roots much earlier than she realized. Even back in sixth grade, Evelyn had completed a school project imagining a cake and pastry shop, where she and her group presented baked goods she had made herself. That early vision slowly began turning into reality.


Evelyn eventually connected with Centro Hispano’s business program, looking for guidance on how to transform her idea into a real and sustainable business. Through the program, she learned practical skills such as planning, budgeting, marketing, and using social media effectively to promote her products, tools she continues to apply in her daily operations.


At the same time, Evelyn was also committed to her personal educational goals. She participated in Centro’s GED classes and successfully completed her process there. Balancing her education, motherhood, and a growing business was not always easy, but her determination and the support of her family helped her continue moving forward.


With encouragement from her parents, especially her father, who supported her both financially and emotionally, Evelyn began looking for ways to expand her dream. Even without the resources at the time, she started researching food trucks and imagining what her business could become. Eventually, with support from her family and guidance from Columbus Bank & Trust, she was able to purchase a truck from a couple in the Madison area, giving MexaSweets a mobile home.


The process came with many challenges and learning curves. Evelyn taught herself how to drive the truck, and together she and her mother learned how to manage repairs and small mechanical fixes themselves. Their determination turned them into unexpected handymen, doing whatever was necessary to keep their business moving forward.


Evelyn is also very proactive in looking for opportunities to share MexaSweets with the community. She actively searches for local fairs, markets, and events where she can participate and connect with new customers. One of her first major events was Centro’s Posadas, which became an unforgettable milestone for her. Preparing for the event was both stressful and exciting, and it pushed her outside of her comfort zone. Although it came with nerves and challenges, the experience helped her learn, grow, and gain confidence as a business owner.


Today, MexaSweets offers catering options and regularly participates in fairs and community events. Their treats may not always be the traditional desserts people expect, but that uniqueness is part of what makes them special. Customers are often drawn in by curiosity and return because the flavors remind them of the kinds of treats they crave but rarely find.


At the heart of Evelyn’s work is a simple motivator she often keeps in mind: “Como me gustaría a mí”, thinking about what she herself would want and creating that experience for others. Her journey shows that entrepreneurship does not always begin with a perfect plan. Sometimes it starts with an idea, a craving, and the willingness to try. With persistence, family support, and access to programs like Centro’s business and education classes, Evelyn has been able to transform a small idea into a growing business that reflects her passion, resilience, and commitment to her community.
